P-38L-5-VN SN 43-50226 'Volunteer, Nashville Convair's First.' 'Volunteer' was the first P-38 built by Consolidated-Vultee (Convair) in Nashville, Tennessee under license from Lockheed. This aircraft was named 'Volunteer' in reference to Tennessee's moniker as 'The Volunteer State,' itself a reference to the strong heritage of military service. Only 113 of the 2,000 P-38Ls ordered from Convair were built due the war's end.
