During the first years of Loftleiðir, two DC-3s (originally C47s from USAF) were used for domestic flights, c/n 13057 was named "Helgafell" and registered TF-RVM while c/n 34280 "Jökull" registered TF-RVP. When the icelandic authorities decided to avoid direct competition between Loftleiðir and Flugfélag Íslands, Loftleiðirs DC-3s were sold.
Jökull however had a really interesting history that became a huge whitness to the DC-3s rugedness; In 1950 a Loftleiðirs DC-4 landed on an glacier after navigation errors and USAF sent a SC-47A from Thule AFB to the rescue, which landed on the glacier to rescue the unhurt crew but due to the altitude of 6500 ft and snow was not able to take of, so both crews had to be rescued by a local dog sled expedition.
One year later Loftleiðir purchased the SC-47A from the Pentagon by 750 USD as wreckage and an expedition was sent to rescue the two planes and their cargo, by then already completelly concealed by the snow. It took one week to uncover the C47 and tow her out of the snow, and for general surprise not only all systems were working but even the batteries were still charged! The C-47 was converted to civilian use and Loftleiðir baptized it "Jökull" ("Glacier" in Icelandic) and even though it was in perfect conditions it was only kept as a reserve plane, and was sold to Iberia after the icelandic service as EC-AHA.
