The rock band Queen Magic Tour
Knebworth Park
The last gig of the tour, and of the band in its original form, at Knebworth on August 9, 1986, was attended by a crowd of 150,000. This concert is notable for Brian May's performance, which many consider to be his best live performance. It was unfortunately during this concert that the group mourned the death of a fan: a young Scottish man was murdered by three other young fans who came from Stevenage1.
This date was added towards the end of the tour when promoter Harvey Goldsmith realized how quickly tickets for the rest of the tour had sold out: the announced concert, the 120,000 "official" tickets (the estimate would be closer to 150,000) were sold in a few days and very shortly before the concert.
Spectators who began to flock to the site in the morning created one of the biggest traffic jams ever seen in England. The group, who was informed of this, hired a helicopter for the occasion to take them to Knebworth Park. In order not to go unnoticed, the helicopter was dressed in the colors of the album A Kind of Magic; Queen therefore caused a sensation when they arrived during the performance of one of the opening bands. At the end of the concert, the traffic jams were worse than at the beginning of the day: the parking lot was not lit, some people spent the night looking for their car and even sleeping in it, giving up facing the traffic.
