This mod has been subject to a copyright strike by Aerosoft despite doing nothing more than modifying basic configuration files of a technical nature, non-copyrightable by their nature. Version 10.69 PROP has been updated to work with the new prop physics as well as work with version 1.0.4.0 of the Twin Otter. You no longer need the extra SU8 prop physics file I had here.
The 1.0.4.0 flight model by default have not been changed so this will still work just fine with the update. This have been tested and confirmed.
Installation
I've grouped all of the mods into one pack. Unzip and move the folders you want into Community.
z-twin-otter-flight-model-mod is Flight Model stuff
z-twin-otter-beltsmoking-mod is a fix for the seatbelts/no smoking switches
z-twin-otter-generator-fix is a fix for the generator number 2 annunciator
z-twin-otter-HSI-mod is a fix for the HSI cross track error
z-twin-otter-sound-mod is to alias the sounds to the King Air
That's it! If you want to get rid of it later, just delete the folders from your community folder. Also, I do not know if this will work with the marketplace version. I have had reports that it does indeed work fine but I haven't personally tested this as I don't have the Marketplace version.
Before anyone asks, these are kept in individual folders for the ease of upgrading for the next Aerosoft patch.
General Dscription:
The Twin Otter is generally very nice to fly but I had a few issues. At low weight you could almost VTOL it with full flap and that's just not right. So I started there and went further, including several bug fixes. Here's what I did:
Flight Model Mod (z-twin-otter-flight-model-mod):
What I've done:
- Modified lift/virtual wing area/incidence
- Reduced lift from flaps
Both of these things work together to change the takeoff/slow speed performance to be much more believable. Expect stalls of 57 clean, 45 dirty when light and and 74 clean, 59 dirty when heavy per the POH. You can also expect the trademark DHC-style nose-down attitude under high lift and especially light weight conditions. At minimum weight with flaps 20 expect her to come off the ground on her own with no rotation. Also expect to push the nose over on landing, touching down at almost a 3 point attitude. For what I'm going for, see this video showing this behaviour
But no more launching off the ground at full flap at 25 knots!
What else I've done:
- adjusted autopilot to hold altitude/glideslope down to a much slower speed, almost to the stall
- adjusted drag figures for the various configurations to tweak cruise speeds. Expect 170 wheels, 165 skis/tundra tires, and 150 on floats
- increased flap deployment speed from 25s to 15s for the entire range based on videos
- changed sensitivity of elevator for better control at slow speeds
- changed sensitivity of elevator trim for quicker trimming
- changed default position of elevator trim to be up the "up" end of the takeoff range
- increased fuselage side area to allow for better forward/sideslips. On floats it's even more. Have fun!
- changed all seats/cargo stations to be empty aside from the pilot seat and 50 lbs in rear baggage
- Decreased sensitivity of elevator trim overall and at higher speeds. It should be a bit smoother now
- Tweaked rudder sensitivity at takeoff speeds. You'll have to REALLY work for a crosswind takeoff above max demonstrated (27 knots)
Optional Mods:
HSI (z-twin-otter-HSI-mod):
- Changed GPS CDI scaling on the HSI. As a workaround, this will happen with every direct-to waypoint but I'll be changing that so it's airports/approaches only. Per 530W standards expect approximately +/- 2nm in the enroute portion, +/- 1 nm in Terminal (within 30-ish nm), and +/- 0.3 nm in Approach mode (within approximate 10 nm.
- Removed auto-slewing from HSI. You'll have to set that course needle yourself per real life. Unfortunately this has temporarily removed the ability to set an course pointer select while in GPS OBS mode. I fell victim to testing this on my Bravo which worked fine. I'll add a workaround soon
Generator (z-twin-otter-generator-fix-mod):
- Fixed the generator light not coming on with the #2 generator without engine #1 running
Seat Belts/No Smoking (z-twin-otter-beltssmoking-mod):
- Fixes the broken seat belts / no smoking switches introduced in 1.0.3.0
Sound mod (z-twin-otter-sound-mod):
- aliased sounds to King Air sounds.
- If you have this, you do not need my other GPWS mod for the Twin Otter
- The sound mod will only work with default Twin Otter liveries unless you edit the livery's aircraft.cfg file as seen in screenshots.
If you are using the TSS mod or any other sound mod, do NOT install z-twin-otter-sound-mod or it will overwrite your other fancy sounds
This will only last until Aerosoft fixes the sounds in the Twin Otter. Note that this will remove all of the custom Twin Otter cockpit sounds and this is mostly for the engine experience.
These mods should work with all variants of the Twin Otter but kindly let me know if you find any blatant errors in integrating.

With the 1.0.3 update those switches wouldn't stay in position so that mod fixes that. I'm not sure if they can be bound to anything as that's outside of my control

It's a beta you can opt into. In steam you can do it through your library > properties but I'm not sure how you do it in Microsoft

I'm interested in the sound mod only.
Twotter installation from Aerosoft, not Marketplace.
mod "aircraft.cfg" file saved to one of the liveries: /SimObjects/Airplanes/AS_Aircraft_DHC6-300_Wheels_Pax
mod "layout.json" and mod "manifest.json" saved to the root dir of the community folder.
But after launching MSFS no single Twotter is available anymore.
What am I missing?

As it says in the instructions, if you're using the default liveries for the Twin Otter, you just need to download and move the z-twin-otter-sound-mod folder to Community. You don't need to move around specific files

I noticed the default aircraft stance from ground is too tail heavy once payload is applied. In real life the plane does not sink that tail low even on max take off weight. It has a particular nose low tail high look. I've been fiddling and i find the points above to be almost the right look. Believe they can be used for the 300 Wheels, 3 blade cargo, 4 blade cargo and skydiver variant. Not to be used for tundra as the actual plane does have tail low look.
